Applications & Use Cases

What You Can Build
On the Water

Every floating cube we sell has spent time doing something — anchoring a marina, holding a swim platform off a private dock, supporting an aquaculture cage, carrying a generator to the middle of a job site. This page is a tour of the configurations our customers come back for, and a guide to choosing the shape that fits the way you actually live on the water.

Step One — Choose the Shape

Dock Shapes & Layouts

Shape is where engineering meets lifestyle. The footprint you choose dictates how many vessels you can berth, where guests gather, and whether the dock is purely functional or doubles as waterfront real estate. It is the single decision that locks in how the structure will be used for decades.

Start with three questions: how will the dock spend most of its hours? How many boats, PWCs, or tenders need a home? And does it need to host people as much as it hosts hulls? The matrix below pairs the residential shapes we deploy most often with the use cases they were built for.

Shape Best For Typical Dimensions Key Advantage Things to Know
Straight Dock Single vessel, simple shore access, light fishing 6–12 ft × 20–40 ft Lowest cost and the easiest to permit One job done well — but only one
L-Shape Dock One slip plus a lounging zone 12–16 ft main run, 8–10 ft return Splits the boat parking from the people area The dependable family layout
T-Shape Dock Multiple boats plus entertaining 8–12 ft walkway, 16–24 ft head Maximum berthing per square foot of footprint Anchoring gets more involved
U-Shape Dock Two or more larger vessels 20+ ft between the arms Sheltered berthing, premium presentation The most material-intensive option
Platform / Custom Swimming, dining, sunset cocktails Built to your shoreline Designed around the way you actually live on the water Worth involving a designer
Step Two — Pick the Application

Real-World Applications

Eight of the most common installations we ship cubes for. Each one is built from the same modular hardware in the Products catalogue — the difference is the layout, the connectors, and the accessories. Click into the Dock Builder when you're ready to lay one out.

Residential marina with boat lift at dusk
Marina
Floating Dock Marinas
Whether you're building a private estate slip or a multi-vessel marina, modular floats scale to the basin. Configurations rearrange in minutes — extend a walkway one season, add a guest berth the next — without re-permitting the whole structure or pouring new pilings.
Long floating walkway leading to a beach
Pedestrian Access
Floating Dock Walkways
Long pedestrian runways that connect shore to deeper water without driving a single piling. They flex with chop, ride out tides, and assemble cube-by-cube across a swimming beach, resort frontage, or rocky shoreline that wouldn't tolerate a fixed structure.
Custom swim and lounging platform with adirondack chairs
Leisure
Fishing & Lounging Platform
Half deck, half stage — a freestanding platform built for two adirondack chairs, a cooler, and the occasional cast. It anchors near shore for swimming and sunbathing, then detaches cleanly for storm season or end-of-summer haul-out.
Boat sitting on a drive-on floating cradle
Boat Storage
Drive-On Boat Dock
Think of it as a private parking space at the waterline. Power straight onto the cradle, tie off, and step ashore — no monthly marina slip fees, no waiting list, no fighting for a launch ramp every Saturday. The boat is home, the home owns the slip.
Row of jet skis parked on a floating dock
PWC Fleet
Jet Ski Dock
Drive-on lift floats keep PWCs out of the water when they aren't in use — no more hull algae, no more saltwater corrosion eating the impeller, no more battery drain from constant immersion. A row of four or five jet skis sits side by side on a single floating dock, ready in the time it takes to clip a lanyard.
Single jet ski on a PWC floating dock
PWC Single
PWC Floating Dock
The PWC drive-on cradle pays for itself the first season it spares your hull from sitting in saltwater. Out of the water means dry bilges, dry electrical, and a craft that starts on the first crank every weekend — protection that translates directly into resale value and years added to the engine.
Aquaculture cages anchored at sea
Aquaculture
Cage Fish Farming
Modular cube floats form the spine of modern cage aquaculture — stable working perimeters around submerged nets, walkways for feeding and inspection, and corner mounts for predator deterrents. The same buoyancy that supports a residential dock supports a fully operational fish farm, with load capacity for daily harvest activity.
Industrial floating work platform with equipment
Industrial
Floating Work Platform
Industrial-grade modular platforms turn open water into a job site — bridge repair, harbour dredging, salvage operations, oil-spill response. The cubes carry generators, containers, even heavy equipment, and reconfigure overnight as the work zone shifts. When the project ends, the platform breaks down into stackable units and ships to the next site.

Ready to Design Yours?

Pick a shape, pick an application, and lay it out — the Dock Builder snaps every cube, fender, and accessory into a grid in real time, and emails the bill of materials straight to our quote desk.
